HEALTHY EATING TIP: COLOR YOUR MEAL
WHAT FOOD AND COLORS MEAN TO YOUR HEALTH…
The color of fruits and vegetables mean a lot more than you think. Nature formed a very clever way of highlighting beneficial nutrients in foods through color. For instance, the dark blue color of blueberries is formed by a high content of anthocyanins and phytonutrients. These are powerful nutrients that also improves brain and kidney function. Each food color group has a special power that targets specific areas of the body. When you create a palette of colors on your diner plate, you’re giving your body ample amounts of disease-fighting nutrients.
Red and Purple
Red and purple foods contain lycopene and anthocyanins, which are antioxidants. They help fight heart disease, lower blood sugar and total cholesterol levels, prevent/improve astigmatism, cataracts, and macular degeneration, reduce kidney stone formation, and improve blood circulation. Talk about heart healthy!
Also containing a rich amount of antioxidants, green foods have been proven to cleanse the blood, regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels, lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, relieve asthma and sinuses, improve bowel movement, eliminate bacteria, viruses, and fungi infections, reduce allergic reactions, detoxify the body, burn fats, and kills bad breath or body odor.
Yellow and Orange
Bright-colored foods, like yellow and orange, contain the power-packed nutrients of zeaxanthin, flavonoids, lycopene, potassium, vitamin C and beta-carotene which fights free radicals in the body, promotes healthy joints, lowers blood pressure and bad cholesterol, regulates the body’s pH balance, boosts the immune system, and builds stronger bones by working with calcium and magnesium.
White foods don’t get enough credit because many associate them with “bad carbs” and processed foods that have been stripped of their nutritional value, like pasta or white bread. However, natural white foods consist of beta-glucans, EGCG, SDG, and lignans. They act together to prevent cancers of the stomach, prostate, hormone, and blood, lower the risk of stroke and heart disease, significantly improve the immune system, and destroy viruses, fungi, and yeast infections.
