KATY PERRY DIGITALLY ENHANCE BY ARTIST, DAVID LOPERA

Being a plus-size woman is not the end of the world. There was once a time when a woman with curves was prized and favored. Of course there is that ole’ debate on whether or not curvy equates plus-size. But let’s face it- having curves- and being fuller is comparable to being plus-size and much like anything else- there are levels.

Spanish artist, David Lopera recently picked up buzz surrounding his latest digital works- embellishing the looks of some of our favorite celebs; making them appear as plus-size. Was the artist trying to prove a point? If so, what was the point? Lopera’s works seems to be more offensive and border-line body-shame-esque. The artist’s latests art installment is clearly mocking plus-size, depicting celebs in a distasteful manner; shameless and sloppy.

Katy Perry, Mila Kunis, Gabriel Union, Iggy Azalea Rita Ora and Jennifer Lawrence were transformed to plus-size celebrities and my thoughts when I saw this was”… And Your Point?”

Lopera’s works exude a great deal of fat-shaming- which is one of the last acceptable forms of “racism” and although “fat” does not qualify as a race- a plus-size body is certainly an ostracized anomaly in this world- even though the average woman wears a size 14 or larger.  In Hollywood’s golden days- the average size of the celebs was a 12, hint Marilyn Monroe. It wasn’t until the 80’s where being a size 0 was the thing to be and with that came stars dieting and looking like skeletons. And shortly after, being weightless became the new beauty standard.

After the release of Lopera’s fat-shaming masterpiece, some celebrities took to social media to express their views on his art. R&B artist, Keyshia Cole commented ” LOL, I’m glad I did not make the list!” which is kind of a double-edged sword. I’m sure Keyshia has many plus-size fans who admire and respect her-but her comment doesn’t quite reflect the reciprocal.

  1. I appreciate this article. I do however feel that we (larger women) are often used as butts of jokes and used as the “ugly” sister. I don’t like that we are so often depicted in negative lighting. It’s as simple as Keyshia Cole saying “She’s still cute” or “She’s rocking the extra weight” but saying “Glad I didn’t make the list” is disheartening. This is an artist who is giving people insight to something that many of other people deal with and for it to be taken negatively is upsetting… IMO
