WHY BLOGGERS ARE RELEVANT TO PLUS SIZE FASHION…
Although the plus size fashion industry is still growing- I must say it’s still in it’s beginning stages. It was only six years ago that designers and brands began to take notice of the potential in plus size buying power.
We must acknowledge the fact that the plus size industry is nearly a 17 billion dollar industry. With very little help from retailers, media, and designers to push forth effective marketing campaigns to help effectively market, a once ignored demographic. The plus size fashion industry experienced a significant boom over the last three years which is a great thing. But I assure you- it wasn’t 100% at the merit of retailers and brands but the merit of bloggers and plus size enthusiast.

Marketing to the plus size demographic has always been something like a backhanded complidiss. On one hand…the retailer wants you to look good and offer you a look that will flatter you but will also make you feel some type of way about your size at the same time.
Today, we have designers and retailers that market to the plus size demographic but employ models in ad campaigns who may not even be plus size OR they may offer plus sizes but you would never see a plus size model- model their collections/ because of the connotations that come along with being plus sized, which is the case for a designer, Elie Tahari.
Aside from independent plus size designers, plus size bloggers have managed to drive plus size fashion forward in the most astounding ways. With straight-size fashion in media- with the help of paparazzi- it’s simple to catch and spot trends amongst celebrities and market it to the masses. But as it relates to plus size fashion and identifying and influencing trends- it’s much harder. Paparazzi isn’t breaking their necks to snap photos of anyone plus size unless it’s Oprah or Gabourey Sidibe (and that’s only with humiliating intentions).

Unlike any other industry- because the plus size industry is still growing- mainstream media isn’t heavily focused on plus size celebrities, models or public figures. In fact plus size women are very much underrepresented in media across the board. Which is why bloggers are so relevant to the advancement of plus size fashion. Plus Size women can relate to plus size bloggers- they embody who plus size women are, and possibly even who we wish we can be. Plus Size Bloggers are fashion celebrities in their own right and it’s so necessary and important to support plus size bloggers in their endeavors to advance fashion. They’re ultimately building an industry- and making history. Paving a media platform and subculture that mainstream media just aren’t willing to do.
